Azerbaijan considers building future F1 track on artificial island in Caspian Sea
Azerbaijan is developing plans for an artificial island featuring residential and tourism complexes that could eventually include a new F1 track. The project is still in an early stage, meaning the Baku street circuit will remain in use for the foreseeable future.
Azerbaijan is working on an ambitious project called "Fire Island," an artificial island in the Caspian Sea spanning roughly 662 acres. The plan envisions both residential complexes and extensive tourism and leisure zones. According to the official announcement, the island's masterplan also includes a proposed Azerbaijan Grand Prix Formula 1 circuit.
First step taken
On September 10, the project's developers signed a cooperation agreement with CSCEC Infrastructure, a major Chinese construction and infrastructure company, which will handle design, financing and infrastructure development.
Still just a vision
Despite the bold plans, the project remains at an early stage of development, with no confirmed completion date for the track and no official agreement in place with F1's leadership. This means the Azerbaijan Grand Prix will continue to be held on Baku's street circuit for the time being. Inclusion of the new track in the developers' masterplan also does not guarantee it a spot on the F1 racing calendar.
Experts note that meaningful discussion of real change can only happen once an official track design, a construction timeline, and approval from F1's sporting and commercial bodies are made public. Until then, the announcement functions mainly as a future vision and a marketing tool to promote the new resort development.
