Azerbaijan eases visa rules ahead of Baku Formula 1 race
Azerbaijan will offer visas on arrival to Formula 1 ticket holders and accredited staff ahead of next week's Baku Grand Prix, aiming to boost attendance and extend visitors' stays beyond the race weekend.
Azerbaijan is simplifying entry procedures for foreign Formula 1 fans travelling to next week's Baku Grand Prix. Spectators holding a confirmed race ticket, whether physical or electronic, or valid accreditation from Formula One Management Limited, the FIA, or the Baku City Circuit Operations Company, will be able to obtain a visa directly at the airport on arrival. Those without tickets still need to apply through the electronic ASAN visa system or an Azerbaijani embassy or consulate.
The simplified arrangement will remain in place until 30 September, four days after race day. This year's Baku race will be held on a Saturday for the first time in its history — 26 September — rather than the usual Sunday, because Azerbaijan observes National Remembrance Day the following day, 27 September.
Weight of foreign visitors
Official figures show that international spectators made up more than 80% of the crowd at the 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Formula 1 data indicates these foreign attendees spent an average of over $2,200 (roughly €2,000) during the race weekend, and 72% said they planned to return to the country within two years.
Florian Sengstschmid, chief executive of the Azerbaijan Tourism Board, said Formula 1 fans typically make travel decisions at short notice, so being able to secure a visa on arrival against a ticket or accreditation turns a spontaneous impulse into an actual weekend trip to Baku.
He added that extending the facilitated visa window beyond race day is meant to encourage visitors to explore other parts of the country, including Gabala, Shaki and the Absheron peninsula, turning a short motorsport trip into a week-long visit and converting first-time visitors into repeat travellers.
Other major sporting hosts have taken similar steps before: Brazil waived visa fees for World Cup ticket holders in 2014, while Qatar used its Hayya Card as a universal entry permit during the 2022 World Cup.
