Asian Games 2026: India claims seven medals on day eight in Aichi-Nagoya
On day eight of the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, India won seven medals, five of them in athletics, while three boxers secured medals by advancing to the semifinals, according to The Times of India.
Athletics leads the medal haul
Indian athletes won five medals on Sunday. Parul Chaudhary set a new national record and personal best of 9:08.67 to take bronze in the women's 3000m steeplechase. Bahrain's Winfred Yavi won gold in 9:04.36, while Kazakhstan's Norah Jeruto Tanui took silver in 9:06.82.
Ancy Sojan came within two centimetres of gold in the women's long jump, her 6.53m effort being overtaken in the final round by China's Huang Yingying, who leapt 6.55m. Shaili Singh (6.42m) also missed a medal after China's Mengyi Tan reached 6.46m on her last attempt.
In the men's high jump, Sarvesh Kushare took silver with 2.25m after Chinese Taipei's Chao Hsuan-Fu cleared the same height on his first attempt. Tejaswin Shankar secured decathlon bronze with 7,934 points after winning the closing 1500m in 4:33.09; Japan's Yuma Maruyama took gold with 8,123 points and China's Xinghua Chen won silver. Harita Bhadra took bronze in the women's 200m (23.20s), edging her Japanese rival by 0.01 seconds; Singapore's Shanti Pereira won gold in 22.78s and China's Chen Yujie took silver in 22.93s.
Squash delivers two silvers
Both squash singles golds went to Malaysia, but India secured two silvers. Eighteen-year-old Anahat Singh lost the final to world No. 5 Sivasangari Subramaniam (4-11, 4-11, 7-11), becoming the first Indian woman to reach an Asian Games squash singles final. Abhay Singh lost his final to world No. 17 Ng Eain Yow (9-11, 5-11, 5-11).
Three boxers guarantee medals
Parveen Hooda (65kg) beat Uzbekistan's Navbakhor Khamidova 5-0 to reach the semifinals. Ankush Panghal (80kg) won by the same score against Tajikistan's Nekruz Salimov. Narender Berwal (90+kg) stopped Thailand's Adthapong Saengtep in under two minutes. Sachin Siwach lost 0-5 to Japan's Shunsuke Kitamoto in the 60kg category.
Badminton disappointment
India failed to secure an individual badminton medal, as PV Sindhu (lost to China's Chen Yu Fei), Unnati Hooda (lost to Japan's Akane Yamaguchi), and India's women's and mixed doubles pairs all fell in the quarterfinals.
Other results
According to The Times of India, India's women's hockey team beat Singapore 7-0, the men's volleyball team defeated Vietnam 3-0, and Indian archers advanced further in the competition.
