The State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) received a call at approximately 6:00 PM on Thursday, July 23, to a three-story public building in Babīte Parish, Mārupe Municipality. In the first-floor kitchen, unattended food had burned, causing heavy smoke. Before firefighters arrived, 55 people voluntarily evacuated the building. The flames died out on their own, and the fire was already extinguished by the time VUGD reached the scene.

This incident was one of four calls related to unattended cooking during the past day. The other three occurred in Riga. VUGD notes that daily calls report smoke in stairwells or from apartment windows, most often due to burnt food left on stoves while residents are away or asleep.

In total, VUGD responded to 43 calls over the past 24 hours: nine for firefighting, 16 for rescue operations, and 18 were false alarms. Other incidents included a truck trailer fire, an abandoned building fire, dry grass burning, trash fire, and a transformer fire.
