Truck driver dies at the wheel in Babīte parish, vehicle hits fence

A truck driver in Spilve, Babīte parish, possibly fell ill at the wheel and drove into a fence; medics pronounced him dead. Police have opened a criminal case.

A driver has died in Spilve, in Latvia's Babīte parish near Riga, after a "Mercedes-Benz" truck crashed into a building's fence. The man possibly felt unwell while driving. The vehicle narrowly avoided hitting a public transport stop.

The State Police confirmed that information about the incident was received at about 18:10. According to police, the man possibly became unwell while driving the truck, which may be why the vehicle ended up at the fence. When medics arrived at the scene, they pronounced the man dead.

Media reports say the vehicle was a sewage-collection truck and that it struck a fence at the grounds of a building.

Investigation
