Bayreuth Festival revives Jay Scheib's Parsifal staging
The Bayreuth Festival has revived Jay Scheib's 2023 production of Wagner's Parsifal, featuring a blue crystal Grail, graphic staging, and strong vocal performances. The opera runs until 25 August.
This year's Bayreuth Festival includes a revival of Jay Scheib's 2023 staging of Richard Wagner's Parsifal. The opera holds a special place in the festival's history, as it was composed specifically for Bayreuth's acoustics and for decades was not permitted to be performed elsewhere.
The production presents the Grail as a large blue crystal accompanied by a light show. Miina-Liisa Värelä's Kundry is joined by an avatar that seduces Gurnemanz at the start of the performance. Video close-ups show the wound of Amfortas being opened and stitched up. Klingsor appears as a figure in pink velvet, and the flower maidens inhabit a dungeon filled with bloody mattresses and corpses. The staging is dominated by violence, with no clear moral distinction between good and evil.
Musically, Värelä's Kundry stood out for its gothic energy and chilling low notes, while Andreas Schager's Parsifal sometimes delivered fragmented phrasing. Georg Zeppenfeld's Gurnemanz was noted for a glowing bass-baritone, Vitalij Kowaljow gave a forceful portrayal of Titurel, and Jordan Shanahan's Klingsor used his bass voice with a sharp edge. Michael Volle's Amfortas was especially compelling in his lyrical outbursts in the third act. The chorus was well balanced, with clear diction.
Under conductor Pablo Heras-Casado, the orchestra was inconsistent, with occasional issues in intonation and ensemble, but also produced moments of rich, nuanced symphonic texture.
The audience response was mixed, with some booing but vigorous applause for the musicians. Parsifal continues at the festival until 25 August.
