Latvian diaspora families gather near Baldone for annual meeting of online language learners
Nearly 180 participants from 24 countries attended the annual gathering of the Latvian Language Agency's online Latvian language students and their families held on 1 August at "Eglītes" near Baldone. The event featured team games, parent discussions and shared performances.
On 1 August, the Latvian Language Agency held its annual get-together for diaspora children, young people, their parents and teachers at "Eglītes", a scenic venue near Baldone. Around 180 people from 24 countries took part. The students usually learn Latvian in online classes, so this occasion gave them a chance to swap computer screens for real-life meetings, hugs and new friendships.
During the event, students competed in the "Savējo lielā pieccīņa" ("Our People's Big Pentathlon"), a set of team games that tested their Latvian language skills and knowledge of Latvian traditions, history and culture. Parents took part in discussions about cooperation between school and family and explored Latvian press publications for children and young people. Participants also prepared and performed acts, celebrating their time together.
The organizers thanked all families who joined the celebration and everyone who helped make the event comfortable, including the hosts of the "Eglītes" venue, companies SIA "Latvian Catering Company", SIA "Coffe spot" and SIA "REN", nurse Marina Geižāne, and bubble masterclass leader Ausma Spalviņa. Another gathering is promised next year, marking the tenth anniversary of the LVA's online Latvian language lessons.
