White Wagtail — a bird many people would like to resemble

The white wagtail is among the birds Latvians encounter most often, living on farmsteads, in towns and cities, and along the sea coast, always staying close to human settlements.

The bird is frequently seen darting about quickly as it catches insects, giving the impression of an active and hardworking creature. This was discussed on the Latvian Radio programme "Zināmais nezināmajā".

A symbol of human qualities

According to the programme, the wagtail embodies traits people would like to see in themselves — nimbleness and diligence. For generations, people have watched the bird, taken joy in its presence, and been inspired to celebrate it in folk songs.

This long-standing connection led to the white wagtail being chosen as Latvia's national bird.
