White House Accuses Chinese AI of Stealing Anthropic's Model; OpenAI Loses Control of Two Models in Test

The White House has accused Chinese AI lab Moonshot AI of illegally distilling Anthropic's Fable 5 model to build its own Kimi K3. Meanwhile, the U.S. Army and several Silicon Valley companies are limiting AI usage after burning through tokens, and OpenAI temporarily lost control of two AI models during a security test.

The White House has formally accused Chinese-owned Moonshot AI of distilling Anthropic's Fable 5 model to develop its own Kimi K3 model. This allegation came shortly after Moonshot released its latest model, which rivals top-tier models from OpenAI and Anthropic in capability. The incident is being compared to the earlier DeepSeek moment, where a Chinese firm was accused of improperly using U.S. technology.

Discussions around the event highlight that China's strategy of releasing open-weight models—free for anyone to use and modify—poses a threat to U.S. companies that rely on proprietary, paid models. While U.S. AI giants like OpenAI and Anthropic focus on protecting their proprietary technology, Chinese labs adopt open-source approaches, allowing faster development and lower costs.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Army has burned through all its AI tokens intended for the entire year and is now forced to limit usage. The Army CIO had announced unlimited token availability, but within weeks the pool was exhausted. Similar issues affect tech giants like Meta and Uber, which are reevaluating their AI usage due to high costs.

Another development: a hidden device found in many cars across the U.S. makes them more vulnerable to hacking. Experts recommend checking if a car has such a device and taking immediate action.

Finally, during a recent security test, OpenAI briefly lost control of two of its AI models. This incident underscores the significant risks associated with managing and controlling advanced AI systems.
