Artist Marta Folkmane wins Baltvilks Prize for children's book illustrations
The Baltvilks Prize for best illustrator this year went to artist Marta Folkmane for her work on Sergejs Timofejevs' book "Moka un Robers." The jury praised her ability to visually blend past and present in a cinematic, emotionally engaging way.
On July 24, the birthday of poet Jānis Baltvilks, the annual award bearing his name was presented as is now traditional. This year the title of best illustrator went to Marta Folkmane for her work on the book "Moka un Robers," written by Sergejs Timofejevs.
The book was translated into Latvian by Jolanta Pētersone and published by "Liels un mazs."
Jury's assessment
In evaluating Folkmane's contribution, the jury highlighted several strengths in her artistic approach. They particularly noted her skill in weaving together contemporary and historical events within a single visual narrative, creating a sequence of images with a cinematic pull. The jury also pointed out that her illustrations manage to emotionally move readers across all age groups.
The Baltvilks Prize is one of the most respected honors in Latvian children's literature. It is awarded each year on the birthday of poet Jānis Baltvilks, recognizing outstanding achievements in the creation of books for young readers.
