Wind farm with 50 turbines planned in Balvi region

The State Environmental Service (VVD) on July 15 this year initiated an environmental impact assessment (EIA) procedure for the "Balvi" wind farm planned by Ingka Investments Renewable Energy Latvia. The project is to be built in the Balvi, Lazdukalns, Rugāji, and Vectilža parishes of Balvi municipality.

The wind farm is set to include up to 50 wind turbines, with a total capacity of up to 400 megawatts (MW). Each turbine's nominal capacity is planned at six to eight MW, and the maximum height will reach 286.5 meters. The study area covers 1,801 hectares.

The exact number of turbines, their placement, model, and technical characteristics have not yet been determined. During the EIA process, several turbine models, possible placement options, and total capacity will be evaluated. The project also includes the construction of a new 330 kV substation, power transmission cables, access roads, and other necessary infrastructure.
