A devastating fire broke out at the Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao bar and restaurant on the outskirts of Bangkok around 10:00 pm local time on Sunday. The flames spread quickly, reaching the ceiling, and smoke is believed to be the main cause of death, according to Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt. He confirmed 27 fatalities and 63 hospitalizations, including 22 in critical condition.

Several victims were found near a fire exit that may have been blocked. Witness Kan Kutirat, a Laotian tourist, described hearing loud screams and chaos. A video he posted on Facebook, verified by AFP, shows patrons with their shirts ablaze fleeing as flames erupted from the door. Kan said he helped carry one woman out of the bar.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul visited the scene. Musicians reported smoke from a circuit breaker near the stage, followed by a power outage and an explosion. Most victims ran toward the back, where toilets had no exit.

Thailand has a history of deadly fires in nightlife venues due to lax safety regulations. In 2022, a fire at the Mountain B nightclub in Chonburi province killed 25 people, and in 2009, a New Year's Eve fire at Bangkok's Santika club claimed 67 lives.
