Barcelona defender Espart to miss about seven weeks after injury in El Clasico

Spanish football club Barcelona has announced that 19-year-old defender Javi Espart will be sidelined for about seven weeks because of an injury. He was hurt on Sunday, when Barcelona lost 2-1 at home to Real Madrid in the top-flight Spanish league match known as "El Clasico".

Espart was substituted in the 30th minute. In its statement, the club said the player has an injury to the syndesmosis joint of his right ankle, sustained in a collision with an opposing player.

The player's season so far

This season Espart has appeared in nine matches for Barcelona and scored two goals.

The team's standing

Despite the defeat, Barcelona still leads the Spanish league table with 27 points from ten matches. In the Champions League, Europe's top club competition, the team has six points from three games and sits in eighth place.
