Barcelona finalise permanent signing of Arsenal forward Gabriel Jesus

Spanish champions Barcelona have confirmed the permanent signing of Brazilian forward Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal, in a deal reported to be worth around 10 million euros (£8.6m). Jesus completed his medical on Monday, finalising a move that BBC Sport had earlier reported was close to being agreed.

The striker had slipped down the pecking order at Arsenal in recent seasons, hampered by injuries and facing strong competition from Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres as the club's preferred central strikers. Napoli had also been interested in signing him, but Jesus ultimately opted to join Barcelona.

Speaking to reporters ahead of Arsenal's win over Aston Villa, manager Mikel Arteta confirmed Jesus had not been training with the first-team squad. Asked whether this signalled his departure, Arteta said the situation involved "personal" matters that he considered clear.

From Manchester City to Barcelona

Jesus joined Arsenal in 2022 from Manchester City and went on to make 123 appearances for the Gunners, scoring 32 goals and providing 22 assists. His move to Barcelona marks the club's third signing from the Premier League this summer, following the arrivals of Anthony Gordon from Newcastle and Rodri from Manchester City.

Barcelona have also been trying to sign Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez, though Atletico have made clear they will not negotiate with a domestic rival. Arsenal, too, have been pursuing Alvarez, but a deal for him appears unlikely to materialise at this stage.

Separately, Arsenal have sold Fabio Vieira to Hamburger SV, while Ethan Nwaneri is nearing a loan move to Borussia Dortmund.
