Traffic jams worsen in Bauska as municipality admits it has no quick fix
Traffic congestion in Bauska is growing during peak hours, and the local municipality admits it currently has no real solution, pinning hopes on a future bypass road.
Long queues of vehicles and longer travel times to cross the town have become routine in Bauska during peak traffic hours. Congestion regularly forms at the entrances to Bauska from both the Cerauksti and Codes directions, with queues from the Cerauksti side sometimes stretching several kilometers. Some drivers avoid the jams by using the bridge on the Mūsa route, but this option is not available to freight trucks.
Municipality admits it lacks a solution
Ivars Romānovs, executive director of the Bauska municipality, openly states that the local government currently has no solution that would substantially fix the problem. He says a real improvement can only come from the long-planned Bauska bypass road. The municipality says it is working on finding better traffic organization measures, but the town is crossed by the road segment with the highest traffic volume in the district, which causes problems during peak hours.
Linda Abu Meri, deputy chair of the municipal council, says she has subjectively noticed increased traffic intensity over the past year, though she currently lacks precise traffic count data. As a possible near-term step, she mentions changes planned for Pilskalna Street, which could be implemented in the first half of next year and might ease the situation somewhat.
Freight traffic adds to the problem
Edgars Paičs, head of the municipal administration, points out that trucks delivering goods to stores are a particularly significant cause of congestion, with traffic volume higher at the beginning, middle, and end of each month. Overall, officials' statements indicate that no concrete short-term action plan currently exists to reduce congestion, with the main hope resting on the future construction of the bypass road.
