European volunteering organisations alliance holds general assembly in Bauska

A three-day general assembly of a European alliance of volunteering organisations began in Bauska, Latvia, on 5 November, with about 50 delegates from 30 organisations. It is hosted by the local association “Jaunatne smaidam”.

The general assembly of a European alliance of volunteering organisations opened on 5 November in Bauska, a town in southern Latvia. Until 7 November, around 50 delegates from 30 organisations and 21 countries will meet to decide on the future of international volunteering, stronger cooperation and upcoming priorities. The event is organised by “Jaunatne smaidam”, a youth and non-formal education association from Bauska municipality, according to its board member Renārs Manuilovs.

About the alliance and the assembly

The alliance is one of the largest networks of international volunteering organisations in Europe. It promotes international cooperation, intercultural learning, solidarity and peace. Its member organisations run international volunteering projects that let people take part in socially useful activities, learn about other cultures and contribute to the development of local communities.

The general assembly is the alliance's highest decision-making body. Representatives of member organisations review what has been achieved, set priorities for further work and take strategic decisions on the network's development. The three-day agenda also includes discussions on current challenges in Europe and the world.

Organisers' view

Manuilovs said hosting the assembly in Bauska is both an honour and a chance to show that international cooperation is not limited to big cities. In his view, organisations and people in the regions can also build international partnerships and influence processes at European level. He said that at a time of growing division and intolerance in the world, volunteering is one way to promote mutual understanding, solidarity and peace.

The host

“Jaunatne smaidam” was founded in 2005 and has worked in youth and non-formal education for more than 20 years.
