New 3x3 basketball court unveiled in Bauska
A new FIBA-standard 3x3 basketball court has opened at Bauska's city stadium, built through a joint project by the Latvian Basketball Union and the local municipality. Local championship games in several age groups were already held there on opening day.
On September 11, a renovated basketball court was officially opened at Bauska's city stadium, now available to all residents for training and competitions. The court was built to FIBA standards as part of a joint project between the Latvian Basketball Union (LBU) and the Bauska municipal government.
The previous surface had worn out and cracked in places, so it was replaced with new certified flooring, and two FIBA 3x3 Level 2 basketball hoops were installed. The LBU supplied and laid the surface, handled its marking, and provided and installed the hoops, while the municipality covered the cost of preparing the court's base and surrounding area.
Investment in the regions
Several local and LBU representatives spoke at the opening ceremony, including Ieva Kirkila, acting director of the Bauska Children's and Youth Sports School; Guntis Kalniņš, deputy chairman of the Bauska municipal council; LBU secretary general Kaspars Cipruss; project manager Jolanta Kalinka; and basketball coach Māris Šekavs. Cipruss noted that part of the profits earned from the European basketball championship was deliberately directed toward regional infrastructure, so young athletes outside Riga would have more opportunities to develop their skills.
Kalniņš, Cipruss, Kalinka and Šekavs cut the ceremonial ribbon and took the first symbolic shots on the new hoop.
Court put to use immediately
The court was made available to athletes on the very day of the opening. Following the ceremony, matches in the U10, U12 and U14 age groups of Bauska municipality's 2026 open 3x3 basketball championship began at 4 p.m., with competitions for the U16 and adult groups continuing at 6 p.m.
The new court adds to the sports infrastructure at Bauska's city stadium, giving children, youth and adults additional opportunities for active recreation, training and competition. The project was carried out jointly by the LBU, the Bauska municipal government and the Bauska Children's and Youth Sports School.
