A video circulating widely on social media shows a powerful surge of water breaking through the Gyirong border crossing between Nepal and Tibet, sweeping away vehicles and buildings. However, according to BBC, information available inside China about the disaster is notably limited — state media have released only a handful of images and reports on rescue operations, while eyewitness footage is difficult to find on Chinese social platforms.

A politically sensitive region

Tibet is a territory China brought fully under its control in the 1950s. Since then, international human rights organizations have repeatedly raised concerns about restrictions on religious and civil freedoms there.

Censorship accusations

The International Campaign for Tibet says videos and other eyewitness material related to the floods are being deleted from social media. The organization has called on Chinese authorities to release complete, fact-based information about the extent of the damage and the number of victims.

The Chinese government denies accusations of censorship, stressing that it has made substantial investments in Tibet's economic development, infrastructure and tourism. Still, the aftermath of the natural disaster has once again raised questions about press freedom and access to information in the region.

Rescue efforts are ongoing, but the full scope of the damage and the death toll remain unclear, as international media and human rights organizations continue to face restricted access to the region.
