The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has charged a 35-year-old man following searches of properties in north Belfast. The searches took place on Friday and Saturday in the Shankill Road and Edwina Street areas. The man is due to appear before Belfast magistrates court on Monday.

The charges were brought under the Explosives Act and the Firearms Order. Among other offences, the man is accused of two counts of possessing explosives under suspicious circumstances, as well as possessing a prohibited weapon, namely one that discharges electricity or noxious gas.

Devices sent for forensic examination

DCI McCallum of the PSNI said officers located a number of suspicious devices and other items during the searches. These were seized for forensic examination.

Local residents who were evacuated as a precaution have been allowed to return home. The public safety operation was carried out alongside ammunition technical officers. All cordons in the area have been lifted, and police thanked residents for their patience while inquiries were carried out.

Appeal for information

The investigation into the circumstances of the incident is continuing. McCallum urged anyone with information that could help inquiries to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 261 30/10/26.
