Belgium's Allemand becomes Basketball World Cup's all-time assists leader
Belgian point guard Julie Allemand set a new Basketball World Cup record for career assists on Monday in Berlin, surpassing Spain's Laia Palau. She now has 111 assists in World Cup play.
Belgium's national team point guard Julie Allemand made history at the Women's Basketball World Cup on Monday, September 7, in Berlin, becoming the tournament's all-time leader in assists.
Entering the final tournament, Allemand had 87 career assists at the World Cup, while the previous record of 108 belonged to Spain's Laia Palau. American players Sue Bird (107) and Dawn Staley (103) held third and fourth place respectively.
Allemand had already been closing in on the record during the group stage, recording 24 assists across her first three games — an average of 8.0 per game. Her career total now stands at 111 assists.
Other leaders on the all-time assists list
Behind Allemand and Palau, the top five also includes Australia's Kristi Harrower with 99 assists and American Diana Taurasi with 92. Also on the list are France's Celine Dumerc (91), Brazil's Janeth Arcain (87), Australia's Penny Taylor (81) and Cuba's Liset Castillo Iglesias (75).
Teammates who benefit most from her passing
Four players still on Belgium's roster rank among those who have most often converted Allemand's assists into points: Emma Meesseman (37 times), Kyara Linskens (15), Julie Vanloo (14) and Antonia Delaere (12).
Beyond the career record, Allemand also shares the record for most assists in a single World Cup game — 13 against France in 2018 and 12 against the United States, also in 2018.
