In the Round of 16 of the World Cup, England beat Mexico 3-2. Jude Bellingham opened the scoring in the 36th minute with a header from a cross, and just 98 seconds later he doubled the lead after a pass from Harry Kane. Mexico responded through Julián Quiñones in the 42nd minute, making it 1-2.

Early in the second half, England were reduced to ten men: in the 54th minute, Jarrell Quansah received a straight red card for a dangerous foul. However, England earned a penalty after a VAR review, and Harry Kane converted in the 60th minute to make it 3-1. Mexico pulled one back from the spot through Raúl Jiménez in the 69th minute (2:3). Despite heavy pressure and 11 minutes of added time, England's defense and goalkeeper Jordan Pickford held on.

England will face Norway in the quarterfinals. Harry Kane scored his sixth goal of the tournament and his 14th in World Cups, tying Gerd Müller's record. Mexico failed to reach the quarterfinals for the first time since 1986, when they also hosted. England had only 33.2% possession, their lowest in a World Cup match on record since 1966.
