Berlin Police Shoot Main Suspect in Pride Terror Attack
German police shot dead 21-year-old Abdul Balut on Sunday, the main suspect in Saturday's attack during Berlin's Pride event that killed one and injured 29.
German police fatally shot Abdul Balut, the prime suspect in Saturday's terror attack on Berlin's Pride march, during an operation on Sunday evening.
Police located Balut in an allotment garden area in Spandau, western Berlin, around 6 PM. As officers approached, the suspect ran at them holding a bladed weapon. Police opened fire, striking him fatally. Despite attempts to save his life, Balut died at the scene.
On Saturday, a white car plowed into a crowd in Berlin's Tiergarten district, near Pride festivities, injuring several people. According to Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, Balut then attacked individuals with a machete, causing further casualties. The attack left one person dead and 29 injured.
Initially identified as Abdul B., a 21-year-old, police on Sunday confirmed his full name as Abdul Balut. He was a German citizen of Lebanese origin.
Interior Minister Dobrindt stated Sunday that the attack appears to have been an Islamist terrorist act.
