Free Hepatitis B and C Testing Across Latvia
The Center for Disease Prevention and Control invites residents to get tested for hepatitis B and C for free at HIV prevention points, including in Bauska, until August 2.
On World Hepatitis Day, July 28, the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (SPKC) launches a free testing week for hepatitis B and C. From today until August 2, anyone can get free, anonymous, and confidential rapid tests for HIV, hepatitis B and C, and syphilis at HIV prevention points in several Latvian cities.
Testing requires prior appointment. One of the points is the Bauska HIV and Addiction Prevention Center at 12A Dārza Street. Pre- and post-test counseling is provided.
SPKC emphasizes that hepatitis B and C often have no symptoms, so individuals may be unaware of the infection for years. Testing is the only way to detect the infection early and prevent liver damage. The state covers the cost of hepatitis C treatment, which not only cures the disease but also protects others from infection.
Hepatitis B and C are transmitted through contact with infected blood, damaged skin or mucous membranes, or contaminated items. Risk exists from non-sterile instruments in medical, tattooing, piercing, or beauty procedures, as well as sharing personal hygiene items (razors, toothbrushes). Hepatitis A and E spread through contaminated food or water and poor hand hygiene.
SPKC recommends vaccination against hepatitis A and B, choosing safe services, maintaining hand hygiene, and practicing safe sex. Everyone is advised to get tested for hepatitis B and C at least once in their lifetime.
