To protect privacy and avoid cloud storage, many people turn to local-recording security cameras. The journalist, with a decade of testing experience, notes that modern local systems now nearly match cloud-based ones, even offering AI detection.

Eufy is recommended as the top choice for most users. Cameras are easy to set up, budget-friendly, and support various local storage options. The EufyCam S4 (around $1,500) features triple lenses (4K fixed and dual 2K pan-tilt), subject tracking, onboard AI for person/pet/vehicle detection, and 32 GB built-in storage (expandable via microSD to 256 GB). Drawbacks: 15 fps frame rate, basic sound quality, and occasionally slow feed loading. The wireless version includes a solar panel. Eufy also offers PoE models like the S4 Max.

Synology cameras are manufactured in Taiwan and NDAA-compliant, suitable for US federal agencies. They are pricier and require Ethernet cabling and a PoE switch. Pairing with a Synology NAS or NVR is recommended. The indoor CC400W (2560x1440, 125° FOV, 30 fps) delivers excellent image quality and accurate detection. Cameras support continuous recording but need licenses (two included, extras at $56 each).

TP-Link Tapo is the budget pick. The Wire-Free MagCam (Battery) captures 2K video at 30 fps with a 150° FOV, records locally on microSD (up to 512 GB), and reliably detects people, pets, and vehicles. Drawback: no HDR, and rich notifications require a subscription. Other models: MagCam 4K Solar ($120), indoor C120, pan-tilt C660.

Aqara cameras stand out with Apple HomeKit Secure Video support and the ability to act as a Matter controller and Thread border router. The Camera Hub G5 Pro (2K, 133° FOV) offers rich color night vision and accurate AI detection. However, the app is clunky, and some features (e.g., event filtering) require a subscription. Indoor option: Camera Hub G3.
