A garden in Bieriņi becomes a haven for bees, hedgehogs and birds

Painter Francesca Kirke and her husband, cinematographer Andrejs Silenieks, have been tending a garden in Bieriņi that is thoughtfully designed with local wildlife in mind. The couple has chosen flowers that are especially attractive to bees, left a dead tree standing to serve as a habitat for smaller creatures, and mow the lawn less frequently to encourage greater plant diversity.

These eco-conscious decisions are combined with a strong sense of aesthetics. Interestingly, while Kirke's artistic work often carries a harsh edge, in the garden she allows herself to be romantic. She admits to taking particular pleasure in the colour pink, which finds its place among the plants and landscape elements.

As a result, the garden in Bieriņi is not only a visually enjoyable space but also a refuge for bees, hedgehogs, birds and other living beings. This approach shows that caring for the environment can be a natural part of everyday life while still preserving a personal and artistic expression. The garden reflects a belief that even a small area can be turned into a place where people and nature coexist.
