Former American Idol contestant and pastor convicted of murdering wife

A jury in Ohio has convicted 40-year-old Caleb Flynn, a former church music pastor and one-time contestant on American Idol, of murdering his 37-year-old wife Ashley Flynn.

The killing took place on 16 February this year at the couple's home in Tipp City, where Flynn shot his wife twice in the back of the head while she was asleep. He then attempted to convince police that burglars had been responsible for the shooting.

After deliberating for less than three hours, jurors found Flynn guilty on all nine charges, including aggravated murder and tampering with evidence. He now faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Evidence presented at trial

The trial spanned eight days of testimony. Prosecutors presented police body camera footage along with data pulled from Flynn's iPhone and Apple Watch around the time of the killing. Roughly 100,000 text messages exchanged between Flynn and his mistress, Alleigha Botner, were partly read aloud in court. Botner had met Flynn while interning at his church.

In one message, Flynn described staying up until 4am thinking of ways to kill his wife without getting caught. In another, he wrote that he simply wanted her dead.

Prosecutors highlighted inconsistencies in Flynn's account to police: he initially said he had been in his daughters' bedroom when he heard gunfire, later claiming he found his wife after noticing the garage door open, before contradicting himself by denying he had gone to the garage at all.

The defence called no witnesses, arguing that infidelity does not amount to evidence of murder and that the case relied on circumstantial connections. Flynn's gun, normally kept in his truck, has never been recovered.

Botner testified for two days about her roughly 18-month relationship with Flynn, including explaining lyrics to an AI-generated song he reportedly dedicated to her. An investigator testified that several apps, including an AI music-generation app, had been deleted from Flynn's phone before the murder.
