Formula 1 team Alpine has announced the return of a former Mercedes technical director to a new, senior position within the outfit. For the 52-year-old British specialist, the move marks a homecoming to the team where he previously served as chief aerodynamicist during its Renault and Lotus eras.

He later spent 11 years at Mercedes, playing a significant role in the team's success and in winning several championship titles, before leaving the Brackley-based squad in 2023.

Broad remit at Enstone

In his new role, he will oversee all technical and engineering functions at Alpine's Enstone factory, with current CEO and technical director David Sanchez reporting directly to him. Team management hopes the addition will help solidify on-track progress and bring the team closer to the championship's leading four teams.

A difficult past season and a change of direction

Last season was a tough one for Alpine, which finished last, in tenth place, in the Constructors' Championship with 22 points. This year, under Flavio Briatore's leadership, the team switched from its own Renault-built engines to Mercedes power units.

The change has paid off in results — drivers Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto have combined for 68 points so far, currently placing the team sixth in the standings.
