Organic farmers now work a fifth of Latvia's farmland, with Madona region leading

The Latvian Association of Biological Agriculture has compiled a new ranking, BIO TOP 500, tracking the spread of organic farming across the country. According to the data, organically cultivated land now makes up about a fifth of all agricultural land in Latvia.
Two regions cross the 40% mark
For the first time in Latvia's history, two regions have seen the share of organically farmed land exceed 40% of their total agricultural land. This threshold is considered a notable milestone in the growth of organic farming nationwide.
Among all regions, Madona stands out with the highest share of organically cultivated land, putting it ahead of the rest of the country by this measure.
The BIO TOP 500 ranking was created to monitor how organic farming is developing across Latvia's different regions, offering an overview of where this form of agriculture plays the largest role relative to conventional farming.
