Dangerous Incident in Riga City Center: Shoplifter Wields Knife

On Tuesday, July 14, a dangerous incident took place in central Riga when a shoplifter fleeing a store brandished a knife while trying to avoid being caught. The confrontation occurred on a crowded street near public transport stops and later spilled onto the roadway, according to TV3's program "TV3 Ziņas".

Store security personnel noticed on CCTV that a man had taken food products and alcohol without paying. Initially, he agreed to return to the store and wait for the police, but later suddenly fled.

A security guard followed the thief and attempted to stop him using pepper spray, but the man, born in 1993, drew a knife and began waving it. Security company G4S stated that the man may have been under the influence of intoxicating substances.

During the conflict, a woman and a child were with him, and guards also noticed another man who may have been connected to the suspect. The thief fled towards Old Riga, where he was detained by the State Police.

Two criminal proceedings have been initiated against the man: one for petty theft and another for resisting a law enforcement officer. Police and security companies report that the number of shoplifting incidents continues to rise, and guards have observed another alarming trend.
