Nearly 400 ideas submitted for "Ideju kauss" business idea competition
Latvia's investment and development agency LIAA has received more than 370 entries for this year's "Ideju kauss" business idea competition, most involving technology. Twenty finalists will be named on November 11, with the final held on December 2.
More than 370 ideas have been submitted to this year's "Ideju kauss" (Idea Cup) competition, the only contest in Latvia dedicated to supporting businesses at their earliest stage of development. Any adult resident of Latvia, regardless of region, was eligible to enter.
Technology leads the field
Among the submitted ideas, the most common approach combines a traditionally non-tech sector - manufacturing, fashion, health, education, tourism, energy or food production - with artificial intelligence, data analytics, automation or digital platforms. A second clear trend is a focus on solving concrete practical problems, such as reducing administrative burden, improving business efficiency, saving resources or making services more convenient to access. At the same time, a notable number of entries involve physical products and manufacturing innovations.
Ieva Jagere, director of the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia (LIAA), said the high number of submissions shows that people in Latvia are not only willing to spot problems but also to seek practical solutions. She noted that the priority now is helping idea authors test the viability of their concepts and find a suitable business model.
What comes next
The 20 finalists will be announced on November 11, with the final competition taking place on December 2. Before then, participants will have the chance to meet in person at a networking event organized by Swedbank, as well as take part remotely in sessions covering financial basics and funding sources, prototyping, marketing and customer acquisition. Participants will also be able to improve their presentation and public speaking skills.
The winner will receive 10,000 euros, second place 7,000 euros, and third place 5,000 euros toward developing their idea. Authors placing 4th through 6th will each receive 3,000 euros, while those in 7th through 12th place will each get 1,500 euros.
Organized by LIAA, the competition is being held for the 18th time this year and is implemented as part of an ERDF project supporting innovative business development among small and medium-sized enterprises.
