Blue Origin awarded NASA contract to build Mars telecommunications network

NASA has chosen Blue Origin to build a new telecommunications network for Mars, awarding the company a contract that could be worth roughly $700 million. Under the deal, Blue Origin must deliver a high-performance orbiter capable of operating by December 31, 2028.

Once in service, the orbiter is intended to relay science data, imagery, navigation information, and critical mission communications between spacecraft operating on and around Mars.

Tied to Artemis goals

The contract fits into NASA's broader push toward deep-space exploration through its Artemis program, which focuses on returning to the Moon. Although Artemis has advanced slowly, it notched a success this year with a crewed mission. These lunar missions are viewed as a stepping stone toward eventually sending astronauts to Mars, a goal that will require far more data and reliable communication links between the Red Planet and Earth.

Blue Origin's recent track record

This is not NASA's first deal with Blue Origin this year — the company earlier secured a contract to build lunar landers. However, its New Glenn rocket program suffered a setback in May after an explosion at its launchpad. While Blue Origin's CEO said launchpad repairs would be finished by the end of 2026, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman estimated the site would remain out of commission until 2028.
