Bluesky, the open-source, decentralized social media platform, has made its interim CEO Toni Schneider the permanent chief executive. Schneider assumed the role on a temporary basis after Jay Graber stepped down as CEO in late March. A former advisor and investor in Bluesky, Schneider announced that after four months as interim CEO, he has officially taken over the position.

"I took this job because I believe in our mission: to develop and drive large-scale adoption of technologies for open and decentralized public conversation," Schneider wrote. "It's a privilege to help advance that mission and be part of the larger movement toward an open social web."

Schneider is a seasoned executive, having been the founding CEO of Automattic, the parent company of WordPress. Graber, who had led Bluesky since 2021, stated upon her departure that the company needed a seasoned operator focused on scaling and execution as it matures, while she returns to building new things. She now serves as Bluesky's Chief Innovation Officer.

Schneider emphasized that the story is just beginning, with the next step being the ability to create smaller spaces and more private communities in the Atmosphere, which he believes will unlock the next wave of growth and innovation. In June, Bluesky announced that Reddit-style communities would be coming to the platform later this year, allowing users to create groups for specific interests and topics.
