BMW has introduced the iX4, an electric take on its compact X4 crossover, known for its sloping rear roofline. It is the automaker's third Neue Klasse EV after the iX5, keeping the silhouette of the combustion-engine model while adding the new generation's signature kidney grille and an electric drivetrain.

Design

With short overhangs at both ends and a sloping tail, the iX4 has a distinctly athletic stance. At the back there is a large spoiler with an integrated brake light, along with slim, low-profile taillights.

Performance and charging

Two versions are planned for the US: the iX4 50 xDrive and the iX4 M60 xDrive. Europe will also get a third, the iX4 40 xDrive. Both US models use a 112 kWh battery. The 50 xDrive is rated at up to 428 miles of EPA range, and its 800-volt architecture allows charging from 10 to 80 percent in 21 minutes. Range and charging figures for the M60 have not yet been announced.

The 50 xDrive produces 463 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque, reaching 60 mph in 4.7 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph. The more powerful M60 xDrive, with 603 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque, hits 60 mph in 3.9 seconds and tops out at an electronically governed 149 mph.

Interior

Inside, buyers can choose an optional 3D head-up display, and the car features a 17.9-inch central touchscreen and BMW's new steering wheel with vertical spokes. The standard audio system is a seven-speaker, 205-watt setup, while the M60 xDrive comes with a 13-speaker, 430-watt Harman Kardon system. Driver assistance and infotainment are run by BMW Operating System X, which is based on the Android Open-Source Project.

Price and availability

The iX4 50 xDrive will start at $67,695 and arrive in showrooms in March 2027, roughly $10,000 less than the larger iX5 60 eDrive. Pricing for the M60 xDrive has not been revealed, but the publication expects it to be about $20,000 higher, in line with BMW's usual surcharge for M models.
