BMW's M division has reached a major production milestone, rolling the one-millionth M car off the line at its Munich plant. The honor went to a BMW M3 finished in a distinctive Fire Orange III shade.

The achievement arrives as BMW M, founded more than five decades ago, enters a new chapter. The Munich factory, which already builds the electric i3, will soon add production of the brand's first fully electric M3. The series version is expected to be unveiled in 2027, and at the anniversary event BMW showed a camouflaged prototype whose design echoes both the i3 and the Neue Klasse concept.

Technical details

The electric M3 will feature four electric motors and all-wheel drive, with the ability to disconnect the front axle so the car can run in rear-wheel-drive mode when needed. Power will come from a purpose-built battery with a usable capacity exceeding 100 kWh. BMW M's chief has said the setup could technically deliver over 1,000 hp, though the production car won't get anywhere near that figure — unofficial estimates put output around 700–800 hp, still more than the current M3 offers.

Combustion engine sticks around

BMW isn't abandoning the classic M3 with its inline six-cylinder petrol engine either. A next-generation combustion version will continue, though it isn't expected before 2028, and according to BMW M's chief, it will not be offered as a plug-in hybrid.

The Munich plant itself is currently being converted into an all-electric facility, with plans to build only electric vehicles there from 2027 onward. BMW is investing roughly €650 million in the overhaul, including a new body shop and upgrades to assembly and logistics infrastructure.
