On July 8, dangerous driving was reported on the A2 highway in the Gotthard Tunnel in the Swiss Alps. Police in Tesina alerted colleagues, and the driver was apprehended by Uri cantonal police at the tunnel's other end. The 22-year-old man tested positive for drugs.

Surveillance cameras recorded 21 overtakes on a solid line and speeds up to 172 km/h – 92 km/h over the limit. The speed limit in the Gotthard Tunnel is 80 km/h. Exceeding it by more than 60 km/h qualifies as an especially serious speeding offense (Rasertatbestand) under Swiss law.

The offender faces at least one year in prison, a fine, and license suspension. In case of particularly severe consequences, the vehicle could be confiscated.
