Statue of boxer Ricky Hatton planned for his hometown
Tameside Council in Greater Manchester has unanimously backed a proposal to create a statue in memory of boxer Ricky Hatton. More than 9,000 people signed a petition calling for one after his death.

A statue is to be created in memory of boxing legend Ricky Hatton in his hometown. The former world champion died at his home in Hyde, Greater Manchester, on 14 September 2025, aged 46.
Following his death, an online petition calling for the boxer to be honoured with a statue was signed by more than 9,000 people. According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, councillors unanimously approved a motion supporting the idea, which commits Tameside Council to the project.
Proposed locations
At a council meeting, Allan Hopwood, leader of the local Reform group, urged that the statue be placed either in Hyde town centre or in Hattersley, where Hatton spent most of his childhood.
Hopwood noted that the day of the meeting, 6 October, would have been Hatton's 48th birthday. He described the boxer as a proud son of Tameside whose achievements in boxing and community involvement had inspired many people, young and old, in Tameside and well beyond.
The exact location and other details of the project were not specified in the source material.
