Bose returns to wired earbuds after 11 years, adding noise cancellation

Bose has introduced its first pair of wired earbuds in eleven years, reviving a product category it discontinued in 2015. The new model, called the Bose Noise Cancelling Wired Earbuds, forgoes the convenience of wireless connectivity but incorporates technology developed over the past decade.

The standout addition is active noise cancellation, powered by two microphones on each earbud working with Bose's QuietControl technology. A button on the inline remote lets users cycle through modes: Quiet Mode reduces ambient sound, Aware Mode amplifies it, and noise cancellation can also be switched off entirely. An additional microphone on the remote is designed to pick up the wearer's voice clearly during calls without needing to be held close to the mouth.

Unlike older wired models, the earbuds' 4.2-foot cable ends in a USB-C connector rather than a traditional headphone jack, allowing them to connect to smartphones and laptops with support for lossless audio and minimal latency. The earbuds carry an IPX4 water-resistance rating, protecting against sweat, rain, and splashes, though full submersion should be avoided.

The package includes a zippered carrying case, three sizes of silicone eartips, and two sizes of stability wings for a more secure fit during exercise.

The earbuds are available for preorder through Bose's online store for $99 in three colors: black, white smoke, and a limited-edition green shade called dewdrop mint. Shipping is expected to begin in mid-October, though the company's press release and online store list slightly different start dates.
