A court in New York on Tuesday sentenced three brothers – Tal Alexander, 40, and twins Oren and Alon Alexander, 39 – to 30 years in prison each. They were convicted in March of drugging and raping dozens of women over a period of decades. Two of the brothers are known as wealthy real-estate brokers in the United States.

The court heard that the brothers used their wealth and social standing to lure women to parties and luxury homes, where the women were sexually assaulted.

Victims speak

Twelve victims addressed the court at the hearing, including one who had not testified at the trial. They described the psychological trauma they had suffered and said they wanted the shame they had felt to fall on the defendants instead. Many asked the judge to impose the maximum sentence of life in prison on each brother.

Maya Miller said that after Tal Alexander raped her in 2014 she lost all sense of safety. Another victim, who used the pseudonym Isa Brooks, said Tal and Alon Alexander raped her when she was 16, and that she afterwards lost the ability to trust herself. One woman said that when she planned to come forward, Tal Alexander threatened her by saying he knew where her sister worked.

Prosecution and defence

Prosecutor Elizabeth Espinosa argued the brothers deserved the maximum punishment, saying the facts of the case "paint a truly devastating picture". During the five-week trial, 11 women testified, several of them saying they were minors at the time. According to their accounts, the brothers gave them gifts and flew them to places including Aspen and the Bahamas, where they fed them drugs before raping them. Prosecutors said the pattern of abuse began in high school, although the trial covered crimes from 2008 onwards.

Defence lawyers argued the sex was consensual and that the brothers were womanizers, not sexual abusers. They asked for the lowest possible sentence of 15 years.

The brothers' careers

Tal and Oren made their fortunes selling luxury properties in New York and Miami. They worked for the American real-estate firm Douglas Elliman, selling homes for celebrities, and in 2022 founded their own New York firm, Official. Alon worked at the family's private security company, Kent Security. The brothers showed no emotion as the sentences were read out.
