Brave1: Ukraine Can Shoot Down Russia's Banderol Missiles Cheaper Than They Cost

Ukraine's defense technology platform Brave1 says it can intercept Russia's Banderol missiles for less than the missiles themselves cost to produce, and has already destroyed at least four of them.

Ukraine's defense technology cluster Brave1 has announced a method for intercepting Russian-used Banderol missiles, which travel at speeds of up to 650 kilometers per hour, at a cost lower than the price of manufacturing the missiles themselves. According to Brave1, at least four such missiles have been destroyed so far.

Banderol missiles are part of the range of long-range weapons Russia regularly deploys against Ukrainian territory. A low interception cost relative to the price of the attacking weapon is considered an important factor in a prolonged conflict where both sides are seeking financially sustainable air defense solutions.

Already in July, Ukrainian troops successfully downed several Banderol missiles using Swedish-designed Bofors L70 anti-aircraft guns. These weapons were designed in the late 1940s but are still being used in modern combat conditions against newer missile technologies.

The fact that an anti-aircraft gun nearly 80 years old can effectively counter contemporary missiles highlights the importance of adapting existing arsenals to new threats, rather than relying solely on developing the newest technology. Brave1 continues to work on new, cheaper air defense solutions to help Ukraine's armed forces more effectively cope with the growing number of Russian missile and drone attacks.
