Bremšmits: investors' concerns about Latvia are smaller than they seem
State Secretary Raivis Bremšmits says foreign investors' security concerns about Latvia are not decisive and the country is currently safer than ever.
Raivis Bremšmits, State Secretary at the Ministry of Economics, said on the TV24 programme “Uzmanības centrā ekonomika” on 3 August that, although the geopolitical situation in the region raises questions about the security of investments in the Baltic states, foreign investors’ concerns about Latvia are in practice not as great as might appear.
He compared the situation with South Korea, pointing out that the capital Seoul lies only about 29 kilometres from the North Korean border. Despite this, world-famous companies operate successfully there and its film and entertainment industries have developed. Bremšmits mentioned Samsung, as well as South Korean cinema and pop music.
According to him, Latvia’s security situation is considerably more favourable. “We are both much further away and, I would say, much safer,” he said. He stressed that it is currently safer in Latvia than ever before.
Bremšmits acknowledged that security questions are sometimes raised in talks with potential investors, but they usually appear only at the end of discussions and are not a decisive factor in decision-making. Investors receive information about Latvia’s security situation and the security measures implemented by the state. The remarks came during a broadcast focused on economic issues.
