In Friday evening's curtain-raiser for the Premier League's fifth round, Brentford defeated Chelsea 3-0 on home turf, temporarily climbing into the league's top three positions.

Match summary

The first hour of the match produced no goals, with the score still level at 0-0 past the 60-minute mark. The deadlock broke when, following a Brentford corner, defender Yankuba Schuster headed the ball across from the far post for Jaidon Anthony, who directed a diving header into the net to make it 1-0.

In the closing ten minutes, Brentford won the ball back in their own defensive third. Chelsea's defenders failed to react in time as Kevin Schade broke through one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Emiliano Martinez saved Schade's initial effort, but Igor Thiago arrived first to the rebound, finishing sharply under the crossbar to make it 2-0.

In the fourth minute of stoppage time, Portuguese forward Fabio Carvalho added a third goal after receiving a pass from Schade, sealing a 3-0 victory for Brentford.

Standings update

Following the result, Brentford moved to 10 points from five matches, sitting in third place, while Chelsea remained on 10 points from five matches in seventh position. Arsenal and Manchester City lead the table with maximum points, both remaining unbeaten after four games.

The rest of round five continues over the weekend, featuring fixtures including Tottenham against Aston Villa and Manchester City against Sunderland.
