Brighton Beat Manchester City 1-0 in the Premier League

Brighton, a club from the English coastal city of Brighton, beat Manchester City 1-0 in round nine of the Premier League, England's top football division. Yasin Ayari scored the only goal in the 11th minute. The result keeps Brighton in third place in the table, while City's position at the top is under threat.

A home error and the decisive goal

After a set piece, City's Matheus Nunes failed to clear the ball, allowing the attack to continue. Following a deflection off Maxim De Cuyper, Ayari calmly finished to make it 1-0.

City were clearly the more dangerous side in the first half, making 30 touches in the visitors' penalty area. Brighton managed only four in the same period. The visitors nonetheless withstood the pressure, with Lewis Dunk the main figure in defence.

Missed chances

Both teams created dangerous moments after the break. In the 48th minute Brighton broke quickly, but De Cuyper, unmarked in the box, could not control the pass and sent the ball into the air. Later, Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen dealt with a shot from Iliman Ndiaye, and in the 76th minute Ndiaye failed to hit the target from close range after a pass by Nico O'Reilly.

City had a big chance to equalise late on. In the 89th minute Abdukodir Khusanov received the ball in the box and shot toward the far corner, but Verbruggen saved. The rebound fell to O'Reilly, whose header towards the near corner flew just past the post.

The table

Brighton remain third, three points ahead of Chelsea. City could lose the lead if Arsenal beat Liverpool the following day.

In another round-nine match, Coventry City won 3-1 at home against Sunderland, their third victory of the season. That lifted them to 15th place, above several teams including Manchester United. If Crystal Palace beat Tottenham Hotspur, United will finish the round in the relegation zone.
