Buckley on Brisbane's radar as Lions search for Fagan's successor

Brisbane is considering approaching former Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley as part of its process to find a new head coach following Chris Fagan's sudden departure. Buckley has a long-standing link to the club, having played for the Brisbane Bears in 1993.

Vacancy after Fagan's exit

The Brisbane Lions are weighing up whether to approach Nathan Buckley to be involved in the search for the club's next head coach. The vacancy at the three-time premiers emerged after Chris Fagan departed last week with a year still remaining on his contract, according to afl.com.au.

Buckley's history with the club

33 years ago, Buckley won the Rising Star Award during his single season playing for the Brisbane Bears. The club is now considering bringing him back to Queensland, this time in a coaching capacity. Alongside Buckley, the Lions are also expected to consider head of football Danny Daly and assistant coach Cam Bruce for the role.

Missed chances elsewhere

This year Buckley has already been part of coaching searches at other clubs but has so far missed out on head coach positions. Tasmania opted for Ken Hinkley, while North Melbourne is expected to announce Fremantle assistant Jaymie Graham as Alastair Clarkson's replacement later this week.

Career at Collingwood and Geelong

Buckley coached Collingwood for ten seasons between 2012 and 2021, a tenure that included reaching the 2018 Grand Final. He currently serves as an assistant coach at Geelong.

Leigh Matthews' involvement

After his one playing season with the Brisbane Bears, Buckley built a decorated career at Collingwood, where he started out under the guidance of champion player and coach Leigh Matthews. Matthews, who won one premiership as Collingwood's coach and three more at Brisbane, now sits on the Lions' board and will be involved in the search for the club's next head coach.
