A British Army corporal, Daniel Barton-Kennedy, who took part in the NATO exercise Eastern Warrior at Tapa, Estonia, in January 2026, failed to follow an order to remove the SIM card from his phone. His phone was then hacked and he was blackmailed over nude photographs. A court martial heard the case this summer and he was demoted. The Estonian weekly Eesti Ekspress reported the story, and ERR News summarized it. The case has raised security concerns on NATO's eastern flank.

The order and what followed

Before deploying to Estonia, the corporal was briefed to keep his SIM card out for the entire stay, and the instruction was repeated when he arrived at Tapa. He did not comply. His phone was hacked, nude photographs were found in its gallery, and the blackmail began: he paid £100, and the next demand was for £250. On January 19 he told his platoon commander, who passed the information to the intelligence officer.

Second Lieutenant Kristjan-Hendrik Paavo of the Estonian Defense Forces general staff explained that every SIM card carries a unique identifier that can be used to locate its user or unit. British Army intelligence officer Captain Farthing told the court that a hacked phone could reveal the capabilities, locations, movements and readiness of troops on NATO's eastern flank.

A risk that is not abstract

The report points to the January 2023 Ukrainian missile strike on a building housing Russian soldiers in Makiivka, which killed 89. Russia's defense ministry said unauthorized phone use had revealed the target. In 2017, the U.S. Army warned that blackmail over sexual material can reach beyond money to military information and access.

Verdict

On July 3, Barton-Kennedy pleaded guilty at the court at Catterick in North Yorkshire, England, to failing to obey an order, and did not dispute that the order was lawful. He was demoted and ordered to complete a 10-month retraining program. The court said his rank made the offense more serious because he was supposed to ensure others followed the rules. An appeal was dismissed at the end of the summer. It is still not known whether the blackmail was carried out by a foreign intelligence agency or by ordinary criminals.
