British couple recount close encounter with Russian warship
Retired couple Jane and Alan Kelvey described their yacht's encounter with the Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich, during which warning shots were fired.
The Incident
Retired British couple Jane and Alan Kelvey have shared their account of a close encounter with the Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich on Tuesday morning. According to Jane, the warship sounded five blasts on its horn, a signal meaning "have you seen us?" The couple then turned their yacht two degrees to port to demonstrate they had noticed the vessel.
Russia's Account
The Russian Defence Ministry stated that the yacht was making a "dangerous approach" towards the warship. After several unsuccessful attempts to contact the yacht via radio and launching warning flares, the warship's crew fired warning shots with rifles.
UK Response
The UK Ministry of Defence described the incident as an isolated event, stating it was not linked to the seizure of a Russian shadow fleet tanker in the Channel on Sunday.
