Three people found dead in Latvian waters over the weekend – rescuers urge caution
The State Fire and Rescue Service of Latvia recovered three deceased individuals from different bodies of water over the weekend, reiterating safety advice for swimming and water activities.

On Sunday morning, rescuers recovered two bodies from a lake in Vecpiebalga parish, Cēsis municipality, and from a pond in Lendži parish, Rēzekne municipality. On Saturday, another person was pulled from a river in Jūrmala without signs of life, according to information provided by the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD).
In all cases, the deceased have been handed over to the State Police to determine the circumstances of death. VUGD representative Anete Strazdiņa stated that the weekend was tragic, with three fatalities already recovered from water bodies.
The service warns that while warm weather encourages people to go near water, drowning remains one of the most common tragedies during holidays. Swimming under the influence of alcohol, in unknown places, or alone is especially dangerous. Rescuers advise choosing safe swimming spots, not overestimating one's abilities, and always supervising children near water.
Parents should understand that being with a child near water is not a relaxation but a task—children need constant supervision, as even a minute of distraction can lead to disaster. For water activities like boating, riding a catamaran, jet ski, or stand-up paddleboard, wearing a life jacket is recommended, and for children under 12 it is mandatory.
