The past weekend in Latvia was marked by tragic road accidents, resulting in six fatalities and several serious injuries, according to TV3's "Degpunktā" program.
The first serious crash occurred on the Iecava–Jelgava road near Zālīte special school. During an overtaking maneuver, a BMW and a Renault collided head-on. An 18-year-old girl sitting in the BMW's passenger seat was killed. Traffic expert Oskars Irbītis noted that the BMW's tires were in poor condition—worn out and below standard, compromising the vehicle's stability.
Hours later, in Zvārtava parish, Valka County, a 38-year-old man was found dead under an ATV. Irbītis emphasized that driving an ATV requires special skills; riding on unfamiliar terrain often leads to rollovers, and statistics show that the ATV usually lands on top of the driver.
On Saturday morning, a tragedy occurred on the Tallinn highway in Limbaži parish, where a BMW collided with a van. Four people died: three Turkish citizens in the BMW (ages 41, 22, and 56) and the van driver, a 40-year-old man. The BMW driver had significantly exceeded the speed limit, lost control, and crashed into the oncoming van. Very long skid marks at the scene indicated a substantial speed violation.
Expert Oskars Irbītis commented that the speed was excessively high, although the exact amount of speeding is unknown.
