Renovation Project for 88 Brīvības Street Building Approved – Construction May Start This Year

At 88 Brīvības Street in central Riga stands a monumental building that a century ago was one of the largest residential buildings in the capital. Although it has gained a reputation as a ruin in recent years, the building has lost none of its majesty. Now there is hope it can regain its former splendor: a renovation project has been developed and approved, and construction could start as early as this year.

The building is owned by SIA "MJ Development," and board member Juris Kalvelis has shared insights into the plans for the complex. The building is described as an impressive residential structure with shops, occupying two plots at the corner of the block and enclosing a large inner courtyard originally intended as a shopping arcade. Two massive gate spaces connect the courtyard to the street, situated diagonally across the yard.

Facade experts have characterized the exterior as elegantly articulated with a rich architectural finish, blending elements of stately Jugendstil and neoclassicism. Thus, the building is an important example of Riga's Art Nouveau heritage.

The project has now been approved, and the owners express hope that construction will begin this year. The exact timeline is not yet known, but this marks the first time in a long while that the building has a real chance of rehabilitation.
