Light and sound cathedral rises again in Brukna as “Songs of Angels” concert wraps up
On August 21, the spiritual music project “Time. You. Prayer.” held its third annual outdoor concert performance in Brukna, drawing a record crowd of nearly 450 people. The next event is planned for August 20, 2027.
For the third year running, the spiritual music project “Time. You. Prayer.” held its summer outdoor concert performance in Brukna on August 21. This year's show, “Songs of Angels,” drew a record audience of nearly 450 people, almost completely filling the open-air "cathedral" of light and sound created by lighting designer Ivars Vācers and sound designer Andris Ūze. The event was described by concert producer Māra Špicberga.
More than a decade ago, an appeal titled “Build your own church!” resonated in Brukna, when hundreds of people contributed their labor and donations to restore and improve the site, including through charity concerts. That spirit continues today, as each summer a special light-and-sound setting is built in Brukna for a single evening.
Music and atmosphere
The concert featured contemporary music duo Miķelis Dobičins and Rihards Plešanovs, performing on cello, keyboards and electronics, with works by composers Christopher Cerrone, Platons Buravickis and Vineta Līce. Aleksandra Špicberga and a male vocal ensemble performed sacred chants in several languages, including Spanish, Armenian, Greek, Arabic, Georgian, Church Slavonic and Latvian.
Masterclasses for young singers
Ahead of the concert, in cooperation with the Iecava Art and Music School, masterclasses called “Singing is Happiness” were held for the second year, attracting students and teachers from nine locations across Latvia. The initiative has proven popular and will continue next year as well.
Audience members traveled from across Latvia and also from Lithuania to attend. The next performance in Brukna is scheduled for August 20, 2027. The event was supported by the Bauska Municipality, the State Culture Capital Foundation, AS “Balticovo” and “Nākotnes parks”.
