Rain delayed the start of the second day at Headingley until 14:45 BST, but England still made the most of the time available to strengthen their position against Pakistan in the first of a five-match Test series.

The standout performer was Harry Brook, who entertained his home crowd with a knock of 91. His innings nearly ended early when he was dropped on just one run, but the reprieve allowed him to continue building England's total. Brook, who was overlooked for the captaincy, showed through his performance how vital he will be to England under Joe Root's renewed leadership.

Brook's innings included a 120-run partnership with Dan Lawrence, who marked his return to the side with 51. That stand followed near-misses for centuries by both Root and Jordan Cox. Root and Cox had put on 150 for the third wicket before Cox, on 73, was caught behind off spinner Ali Usman. Just four balls later, Root was also dismissed for 66, given out lbw.

Brook himself fell to an error in the final half hour of play, missing a shot to the leg side off Usman and being bowled. It was the second time in as many Tests at this ground that he has been dismissed in the 90s.

Pakistan had been bowled out for 171 in their first innings, with Shafique top-scoring on 61, while Tongue and Robinson each took five wickets. By the close, England had reached 366 for 8, giving them a lead of 195 runs. Usman finished with his maiden Test five-wicket haul, also removing Gus Atkinson and Ollie Robinson in successive deliveries.
